Theology is a four-year, full credit program following the standards of the St. Louis Archdiocese.  With the direction of the theology department staff, students will participate in a variety of prayer experiences, discuss faith issues, identify Catholic morals and apply them to everyday life, and experience opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. Students are required to be enrolled in religion class each semester they attend Rosati-Kain.  Students also participate in liturgical activities, retreats, and the junior service program sponsored by the Campus Ministry Office.

RELIGION COURSES

011: Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture

  • required for all freshmen
  • ½ credit
  • Prerequisites:  none

Students are invited to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ as they grow in appreciation of the Sacred Scriptures.  They will learn how to read the Bible and become familiar with the major books in each section.  Students will pay particular attention to the Gospels, where they may grow to know and love Jesus Christ more personally through increased understanding and prayer.

 

012: Who is Jesus Christ?

Students will deepen their understanding of the Mystery of Jesus Christ, the Living Word of God who is the second person of the Trinity.  As students grow in their appreciation of Jesus as God's ultimate revelation, they will also learn who He calls them to be.  Students will explore faith, the Incarnation, and teachings about our Blessed Mother and the Trinity.  They will examine self-knowledge, personal relationships with God and others, and the virtue of chastity.


021 New Testament Studies (required, 10)

  • Prerequisites:  none

Students explore New Testament writings with primary attention to the gospels.  Emphasis of academic and experiential pursuit is placed upon who Christ has been in history as well as Christ's presence in our lives today.  Students demonstrate knowledge of Jesus Christ in past and present history and of biblical scholarship.  Students gather as small communities of faith.


022 Church: Reflections on Past and Present

  • required for sophomores
  • ½ credit
  • Prerequisites:  none

This course highlights major developments of the Catholic Church from its beginnings through the twenty-first century.  American and local Church history is examined so the students can develop a sense of rootedness in faith.  This course also incorporates answers to questions of ecclesiology:  What does it mean to be the body of Christ?  What is the Church?  What does it mean to be a member of the Catholic Church?


031 Sacraments

Students will study the rituals and history of the sacraments of the Catholic Church.  Race, signs, and symbol will be examined as they relate to the celebration of the sacraments.


032 Christian Morality

  • required for sophomores
  • ½ credit
  • Prerequisites:  none

In this study of Christian Morality, students will examine the process involved in choosing to live a Gospel-valued life.  The course is developed around the Christian virtues and shows the Christian moral life as one's total commitment to the development of a holistic and virtuous life.  Development of a personal and communal awareness of moral decision-making and judgment will also be covered.  Catholic moral teaching will be presented as it relates to a variety of issues.


041 World Religions

In this survey course, students will learn the history, traditions, and basic beliefs of the world's major religious traditions.  This overview will provide students with the foundation of knowledge necessary for interfaith dialogue and collaboration.


042 Social Justice

Social Justice is a quarter course designed to introduce students to Catholic Social Teaching and increase student awareness of and response to social justice issues.


043 Vocations 

  • required for seniors

  • Prerequisites:  none

In this course ,students will explore the main vocational choices in life, what they mean, and how to best live them within the context of Christian belief and Catholic teaching.  They will also learn the process of discernment in choosing a vocation.


044 Women of Faith

  • required for seniors
  • ¼ credit
  • Prerequisites:  none

Women of Faith is a quarter course designed to examine the role of a number of influential women in the history of the Catholic tradition, increase awareness of the faith lives of present day women of faith, and encourage reflection upon self as a woman of faith.  Stages of spiritual development will be explored.
