About Rosati-Kain

Mission Statement

Rosati-Kain High School is a Catholic, Archdiocesan college preparatory school for young women who want to be challenged and supported in faith and in their efforts to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become their best selves contributing in the spirit of Jesus Christ to a changing, multi-cultural world community.

The Rosati-Kain Crest

A crest is a symbol of honor and integrity. The R-K crest features a coat of arms which stands as a symbol of origin. it places the community under the protection of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, whose one aim is to promote Christ's work here on earth and the exercise of all virtues. Central to the crest is the cross and the royal crown sitting atop the Fleur de Lis, a symbol of Saint Louis and the city of St. Rosati-Kain crestLouis, both advocates for Rosati-Kain and its religious goals. Running across the bottom of the crest are wavy lines, representing our location in the City of St. Louis. The Crest is divided in half with the left half of the crest honoring the Carondelet Sisters of St. Joseph with the values of humilitas and caritas. The right side of the crest honors the School Sisters of Notre Dame and features the values of virtus and scientia. To the left of the crown, the crest features the star and crescent moon, both symbols of devotion to mary and a mark of her protection. To the right of the crown is the JMJ symbol which represents the say Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, an expression that calls for their protection and assistance in the work of the school. Finally, two branches are represented at the bottom of the crest; the laurel represents virtue and valor and the palm represents science and knowledge.

Our Philosophy

Rosati-Kain places emphasis on creative thinking and on responsible freedom lived in the context of Christianity, which calls each person to actualize the potential that lies locked within the human being.

To think creatively is to search out, discover and analyze our feelings in relation to the ideas which comprise our heritage.

To be responsibly free is to make informed personal decisions, to be accountable for one's actions and to respect the rights of others. The value we place on creative thinking and responsible freedom is the core which gives direction to the education Rosati-Kain offers.

We value the individual highly and encourage her to explore alternatives and develop personal values that fulfill her and benefit society. We foster in each other the faith and compassion characteristic of a Christian.

We value a climate of freedom necessary for critical thinking and artistic expression, as well as the creative integration of the two. Such a climate provides a variety of styles of learning in which each person learns to deal creatively with a constantly changing world.

The R-K Vision

Drawing qualities from the R-K crest, our vision states that we continue our legacy of educating women within the Catholic tradition for Knowledge, Virtue, Charity, & Humility.

During the 2009-2010 school year, R-K students and faculty are focusing on the concept and practice of caritas, one of the four qualities emblazoned on the R-K crest and an essential component of the R-K Vision. To illustrate this theme, the current senior class chose a motto by St. Francis of Assisi to guide the year: "Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear, nor ignorance." The quote can be found throughout the school building this year, accompanied by an image of a tree flowering with hearts.

As part of the preparations for the 100th Anniversary in 2011-2012, a series of liturgical banners has been commissioned to celebrate the R-K Vision and highlight each of the four qualities from the crest: caritas (charity), scientia (knowledge), humilitas (humility), and virtus (virtue). The Caritas banner was completed in the fall of 2009, and was first used as part of R-K's mass to honor grandparents in November at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica.

The banners are being created by the Liturgical Fabric Arts department at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse; funds for the project were donated by Ms. Anne Kimberly, R-K class of 1936. The banners for Caritas and Scientia are already completed; the student body has been challenged to come up with a symbol to represent the themes of Humilitas and Virtus.

Each year, the R-K school community focuses on one of these four qualities; by the time an R-K student graduates, she will have spent one school year reflecting on each of the elements of the Vision. Throughout the school year, students and faculty have been incorporating Caritas into various service works and community events. Some of their projects include:

- A student-raised $3,500 to St. Patrick's Center's Key Player Initiative.

- 40 students participated in the "Kick for a Cure" at Visitation Academy.

- 8 members of the R-K service club joined the "2009 Walk Now" to benefit "Autism Speaks" in Forest Park.

- Members of the National Honor Society worked tutoring fellow R-K students in a variety of subjects.

- The R-K faculty supported United Way 150%.

- Members of the Diversity Club attended the High School Diversity Conference on October 28, 2009 at Ursuline Academy.

- October Day 2009 focused on R-K's work in the world community, featuring 14 speakers and a presentation by the Black Repertory Theatre of St. Louis.

- $1,650 was collected at the R-K Christmas Concerts for the Overseas Mission Club project "Bunks for Beauties." R-K students participating in the project raised a total amount of $3,111.75, which will help fund the construction of dormitories for students at the SSND school in Mkar, Nigeria.

- The R-K Service Club collected 178 lbs. of candy for the St. Mathew the Apostle Parish Halloween Fun Fair in North St. Louis City.
